Slot appeared to be approaching referee Michael Oliver to shake his hand after full-time, yet the words between the two saw the Liverpool manager receive a red card, along with assistant Sipke Hulshoff. The matter is now back with the FA, who will decide what punishment to hand out.

Slot was angry at the end of the 2-2 draw after James Tarkowski's dramatic equaliser for Everton was allowed to stand, claiming Ibrahima Konate had been pushed in the build-up. Tempers flared among the players, too, with Abdoulaye Doucoure and Curtis Jones both seeing red after a melee.

An FA statement read: "It is alleged that both clubs failed to ensure their players and/or technical area occupants did not behave in an improper and/or provocative way following the final whistle. The Liverpool manager allegedly reacted in an improper manner and/or used insulting and/or abusive words and/or behaviors towards both the match referee and an assistant referee after the match had finished."

The timeline of what happens next is not clear, with the FA able to proceed with the case at their pace. Should the timing and nature of the punishment go against Slot, it is not inconceivable that he might be banned from the touchline for next month's Carabao Cup final against Newcastle at Wembley.
